I am grateful for the immense value of a smile. I woke up at 4:00 AM in Las Vegas Sunday morning because I had happily scored an earlier-than-scheduled flight home. This week had been pretty intense and I was ready to get back. I’m simply not a morning person and I’ve had a lot to think about recently, so I was not the most cheerful when the room elevator door opened onto the casino floor. The Bee Gee’s hit “Stayin’ Alive” was blasting at 4:45 and it hit me in the gut – hard. “What the hell? Am I just stayin’ alive or am I living?” My mood was worsening as I rolled my baggage (literally and figuratively) through the casino. Then I hopped into a waiting cab and my day changed in a blink of an eye. Without the least bit of annoying pretense, my driver, with a genuine, wide, toothy grin said – “Good morning! Isn’t life amazing? And we ain’t seen nothing yet!” Boom. In an instant I was smiling and my whole day had taken a 180-degree turnaround. Never underestimate the power of a smile. It can move mountains. I am so grateful that a complete stranger made an effort to spread a positive message – and that I was able to stop and hear it.
